What to bring and what to leave at home

 

  • Yoga mats provided (at Mind Body Studio) otherwise bring a mat
  • Wear comfy pants and a tight fitting top so you can see your isolations. (you don't have to show your belly, but don't wear anything baggy)  
  • Bring water to flush out those toxins you just stirred up 
  • Creative attire is encouraged, but be aware that we are stretching on the floor, so big full skirts might get in the way (you can put them on after the stretch)
  • Please, no hip scarfs with beads or coins.  They break, fall off and get in your feet or studio rug
  • Dance shoes (ballet or paws)  Barefeet are fine, but the studio has a short rug so spins might be uncomfortable
  • Shut cell phones off
  • Feel free to bring a notebook
  • Leave at home any negative attitudes about yourself, your body or others
  • No divas.  We are all here to support each other as dancers and artists

Class Description

 

Learn Belly Dance, Tribal Style!

    Julyana is teaching an Improvisational Tribal Style Belly Dance Class series that will have you up and dancing together on the first class!  This dance style is a real "thinking dance" where you go beyond performing a piece of choreography and "connect" with your fellow dancers in a circle style.  It is a grounded and earthy dance style performed within a synchronized group dynamic, all done improvised and on the spot!  Tribal Style Belly Dance is a fusion of traditional Middle Eastern Dance and folkloric dance movements from India, Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain.  We will prepare for dancing with stretches, posture review and a moving meditation.  Then we will move onto learning slow moves, such as the Figure 8 Taxeem and body rolls; and fast movements, like the 3/4 Shimmy, Egyptian Basic with 1/2 turn, Arabic, Pivot Bump and Choo-Choo.  Each dancer learns to communicate through body language and is mentally aware of her partners at all times.  Class will also include simple line-ups, combinations, cues, and transitions. Julyana starts with the concept of lead and follow, and brings the class toward dancing as a group or tribe.  No two dances are ever performed the same... and we like it that way!  If you're looking for something different where you "connect" with the other dancers on stage, this is it!!

     

    Breathing, stretching, and strengthening are an important part of each class. Julyana goes over each movement throroughly so that every student will understand. ITS is a great way for beginners to get to know belly dance, or for experienced dancers to expand their repertoire. Plus, the costuming is creative and colorful!!! All ages, shapes and sizes welcome.
